COWAL Golf Club welcomed an excellent field for its prestigious Western Ferries Senior Open, with home players dominating the leaderboard in one of the club’s flagship events of the season.
The competition attracted a strong turnout and was played on a course presented in superb condition thanks to the efforts of greenkeeper David Owens.
The day’s standout performance came from Cowal’s Ally MacDonald, who produced a magnificent 42 Stableford points to claim the Bradshaw Cup and the title of Senior Open Champion. His impressive total proved unbeatable, with fellow Cowal member Kenny Westwater finishing just one point behind on 41 points. Crawford Richmond secured third place on countback with 40 points, ahead of Johnny Fisher, who finished fourth with 36 points.
The David Peel Trophy, awarded for the best scratch score, also stayed at Cowal. Steven Girvan lifted the trophy with a fine round of 76, edging out Fraser MacDonald, who finished runner-up on 78 after countback.
The Clason Memorial Trophy, presented to the leading visiting player, went to Neil Munroe of Blairmore & Strone Golf Club after a solid 35-point return.
There were also prizes across the age categories. Ally Edgar won the 50-59 section with 36 points, Gerry Gallagher topped the 60-69 category with 37 points, while David Cooper of Innellan Golf Club claimed the 70-plus honours with an excellent 40 points.
The club expressed its gratitude to title sponsor Western Ferries for its continued support of one of the most important events on the club’s competitive calendar. Thanks were also extended to David Owens for preparing the course to such a high standard and to John Cairns, whose expert organisation ensured the competition ran smoothly once again.
Attention now turns to Cowal Golf Club’s annual Club Championship, which takes place on July 11, 12 and 18. Members are encouraged to enter via the Scottish Golf app as early as possible to secure their preferred tee times.
