DABC compete in first bouts of the year

Dunoon Amateur Boxing Club (DABC) had their first bouts of the year at the weekend, as two competitors travelled to the Sparta show.
Among the boxers was eight-year-old Laird McCowan, who entered the ring for the first time.

Laird competed in a skills bout, meaning there was no winner or loser and the match-up was to showcase their technical skills.
Regardless, Laird endured three fast-paced rounds against another skilled boxer in an away bout, a feat not to be sniffed at.

On his first boxing event, Laird said: “Going into the ring I smiled and felt excited, and after I was just so happy but very tired. I can’t wait to do it again.”

Laird has been training at the club since he was six, when he started with his brothers, and his family were very proud of his achievement.
A spokesperson for DABC said: “As a club we are very proud of Laird; to do his first bout on an away show is amazing.
Laird has the determination and the heart to become a DABC champion one day.”

Elsewhere, Ryan Barbour put in a spirited performance, giving his opponent the count in the first round.
Unfortunately, the judges voted against him after three three-minute rounds, but Ryan wasn’t disheartened, adding: “I felt I had done enough for the win, but I’m buckling down now for the Development Championships at the end of the month.”
