Dunoon Community Group is in the midst of a volunteer trip to Tanzania, with this year’s visit involving a group of adult volunteers.
After arriving in Tanzania, the group spent the first two days settling in and becoming familiar with their surroundings. Any initial worries soon eased as they experienced the warmth of both the local welcome and the climate.
The volunteers spent their first days working on community programmes, supporting local people and working closely together as a team in the likes of St Philomenia Day Care Centre. They have been welcomed wherever they have travelled, with the positive atmosphere and friendliness of the communities making a strong impression.
Alongside the volunteering work, the group also had the opportunity to experience some of Tanzania’s natural attractions. The adults treated themselves to a two-day safari, beginning with a visit to Tarangire National Park. After staying overnight, they travelled early the following morning to Ngorongoro Crater.
Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and within minutes of entering the crater the group were able to observe a wide range of wildlife living side by side in the unique landscape.
The visit formed part of Dunoon Community Group’s ongoing international volunteering programme, offering participants the chance to support communities abroad while taking part in a shared cultural and educational experience.
As the adventure draws to a close, a follow-up feature on the experiences of the volunteers will be published in this newspaper in the coming weeks.
