Dunoon event to help residents prepare for power cuts

A FREE community event in Dunoon later this month will encourage people to think about how they would cope during a power cut and share ideas on reducing the impact of rising energy costs.
Volunteers with Dunoon Community Development Trust’s Grow Food Grow Dunoon project are behind the latest in a series of What If…? get-togethers, which focus on climate change and community resilience.
The next event will take place on Saturday, April 18, from 11am to 1pm at the Grow Food Grow Dunoon community garden in the grounds of Struan Lodge Residential and Daycare Service on Bencorrum Brae.
This month’s discussion will centre on power, with those attending invited to share their experiences of power cuts and explore practical ways to prepare for future outages.
Topics set to be discussed include how to cope without lighting, heating, cooking facilities, internet access and phone charging, as well as ideas for keeping food cool and staying warm.
The session will also look at possible equipment people may find useful and consider ways of helping to cut energy bills as costs continue to rise.
Organisers say the get-together is open to both new attendees and those who took part in the previous session, which focused on food.
Hosts Martin Gerrish, Kirsty Heron and Jef Carrick are encouraging people to come along, learn practical skills and share concerns and ideas in an informal setting.
They said: “We’re looking forward to chatting with people about things that matter to us all, about how we can be ready for whatever the future brings.”
Places are limited to 20 people, with pre-booking required.
Refreshments will be available, and both indoor and outdoor seating options will be on offer.
Further details and booking information can be found at whatsondunoon.org.
The get-togethers are funded by Argyll and Bute Climate Action Network (ABCAN) and supported by Dunoon Community Development Trust.
