Dunoon Performer Takes on Iconic Role in Shirley Valentine

A DUNOON performer is preparing to take on the biggest challenge of her acting career as she steps into the spotlight for a one-woman production of Shirley Valentine at the Albany in Greenock.

Elaine Graham will star in the acclaimed play, bringing to life the much-loved character made famous on screen by Pauline Collins.

Speaking about the opportunity, Elaine admitted she was immediately drawn to the role.

She said: “When Jonty first approached me about the possibility of playing Shirley Valentine I was thrilled.

“She is such an iconic character and everyone of a certain age remembers the film with the wonderful Pauline Collins in the title role.

“The prospect of undertaking this role was exciting and terrifying in equal measure, especially given that the play is a one- woman show.”

Elaine is no stranger to the stage, having been involved in theatre and musical theatre productions across Scotland for many years. More recently, she has performed with groups including Greenock Players, Greenock Light Opera Club and Cowal Choral Club.

Last year saw her take part in In Other Words with LEC Productions, a powerful play exploring Alzheimer’s, which toured Dunoon, Greenock and Oban.

Over the years, she has built up an impressive list of roles, including Nancy in Oliver!, Annie in Annie Get Your Gun, Chris in Calendar Girls, and Mrs

Teavee in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Despite that experience, Elaine believes Shirley Valentine represents a new task.

She continued: “I think this is the biggest challenge I have taken on as an actor.

“I am incredibly excited to be part of this production and getting the opportunity to bring this fantastic character to life.”

The production is set to be a highlight, with Elaine’s performance offering a fresh take on a classic story of self-discovery and humour across March 27 and March 28.
