Dunoon soldier recognised in King’s Birthday Honours

A FORMER Dunoon Grammar School pupil has received a prestigious military award in recognition of more than two decades of dedicated service.

Captain Paul Edward John Markwick, of the Adjutant General’s Corps (Royal Military Police), was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal as part of His Majesty King Charles’ Birthday Honours List 2026.

The honour recognises exceptional contributions made by Army personnel and civil servants, celebrating transformational leadership, professionalism and commitment both at home and overseas.

Paul was one of just four members of the Royal Military Police to receive the award and among only 69 personnel across the entire Army recognised.

A former DGS pupil, Paul joined the Royal Military Police in 2003 and has since enjoyed a distinguished career which has taken him across the world.

During his service he has deployed and worked in Iraq, Afghanistan, Germany, Kenya, Kazakhstan, Belize, Canada, Tunisia and most recently Colombia.

Over the past 23 years, Paul has progressed through theranks, risingtoWarrant Officer Class 2 and being pre-selected for promotion to Warrant Officer Class 1 before choosing to accept a Late Entry commission as a Captain following a rigorous selection process.

Despite his career taking him around the world, Paul has remained closely connected to his hometown.

He regularly returns to Dunoon to visit his parents Liz and Terry Markwick, as well as his wife Joanne’s family.

Joanne, also from Dunoon, is the daughter of Captain Alan and Maria MacKellar.

Like many military families, Joanne and their son Jack have supported Paul throughout numerous postingsandmovesaround the country and overseas.

The family has now settled in North Yorkshire, where Joanne has established her own business and Jack, who recently turned 16, has completed his GCSEs.

Away from military life, Paul has always been a keen footballer and represented several military teams throughout his career.

Last year he returned to the pitch alongside friends from his DGS days to take part in the local police five-a-side tournament — although the group jokingly admitted afterwards it may finally be time to hang up their boots.

Paul’s award marks another proud achievement for the former Dunoon pupil, whosecareerhastakenhim from Cowal to serving his country across the globe.
