For Bute has announced a fresh round of donations to community groups across the island, supporting activities ranging from youth events and outdoor education to elderly care, local food growing, and the performing arts.
One of the largest awards this season went to the Bute Junior Agricultural Club, which is set to host a two-night concert on January 16-17, 2026, at Rothesay Joint Campus. The event, entirely organised by the youth club, has received £1,500 from For Bute to help with production costs. While the concerts are a highlight of the local calendar, they also play a vital role in enabling the club to compete in national competitions. Last year the group secured an impressive third place in Scotland’s Club of the Year awards, firmly establishing themselves among the country’s best.
Support for Bute’s older residents also features prominently in this funding round. Bute Elderly Befrienders has been awarded £1,550 to help with their service support costs. The organisation provides a wide range of essential services, including operation of a disabled-access minibus, one-to-one home-visiting befriending, hospital-visit support, information services, and encouraging clients to access other support networks on the island. Around 70% of those they assist are in their 80s and 90s, making the group’s work a cornerstone of wellbeing for Bute’s older population.
Elsewhere, the Bute Allotment Association will receive £500 to build and replace raised beds at their site. Due to the historical condition of the ground, vegetables cannot be grown directly in the soil, making raised beds crucial for the continuation of local food-growing efforts.
Meanwhile, preparations are already underway for this year’s annual pantomime, which has been granted £1,150. The funding will cover the cost of hiring the cinema for both rehearsals and performances, along with costumes for the cast.
The Downes Academy of Irish Dance has also been awarded £1,500 to support their annual event taking place on February 14, 2026, ensuring dancers have the resources they need to put on another memorable showcase.
In education, a group of Primary seven pupils from Rothesay Joint Campus recently visited For Bute to receive a cheque for £3,000. The donation will fund a residential week at Ardentinny Outdoor Education Centre, giving pupils a special experience to mark the end of their primary schooling.
For Bute expressed gratitude to all who contribute to the charity’s work, adding: “We would like to thank all those who donate and/or buy from us.”
For Bute is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 4pm, and is located at 39 Victoria Street, directly opposite the Winter Garden Cinema.
