CHRISTMAS shoppers across Argyll and Bute are being handed an early present: free parking in council off-street car parks in the run-up to the big day.
From Wednesday, December 11, to Tuesday, December 24, drivers will be able to park free of charge in all council-run pay-and-display car parks across the area.
On-street charges and private car parks are not included.
The move is part of Argyll and Bute Council’s bid to boost town centres at one of the most important trading periods of the year.
Councillor John Armour, policy lead for roads, transport and amenity services, said the offer was aimed at helping both shoppers and local businesses.
He said: “Our local shops have so much to offer — from unique gifts to fantastic festive food — and they are vital for jobs and our local economy. We also know Christmas can be a really expensive time. Dropping parking charges is one practical way we can make it easier for people to come into town, browse, linger a bit longer and support their high streets.”
Residents are being encouraged to use the free parking window to shop local and give independent traders a welcome seasonal boost.
Details of council car parks and normal charging arrangements can be found on the Argyll and Bute Council website.
