A homeless unit in Greenock – previously labelled ‘outdated’ and ‘no longer fit for purpose’ – is expected to be decommissioned by the end of this month.
The Inverclyde Centre in Dalrymple Street has been wound down as part of a switch to a community-based accommodation model supported by a helpline.
The last resident left in early March and work has been undertaken to clear rooms and storage cupboards on the first and second floors.
Other jobs continue to progress, such as archiving and disposal of paper records, and it has been advised a provisional closure and handover date is scheduled for Tuesday, June 30.
That’s according to a report which will be considered by elected members at Inverclyde Integration Joint Board on Monday.
It explained: “Since 2003, the Inverclyde Centre has formed part of the council’s statutory response to homelessness, providing a temporary accommodation option for those being assessed or having been assessed as homeless.
“The hostel-style model has been identified as increasingly out of step with national policy, local strategic ambitions and best practice in homelessness services.
“Throughout late 2025, work was undertaken to increase the provision of community based temporary accommodation to facilitate the phased closure of the Inverclyde Centre.
“In December 2025, one entire corridor was closed. By the end of January 2026 there were eight residents remaining within the centre and plans were in place for the allocation of community based temporary accommodation as they became vacant due to people moving into permanent accommodation.
“Across February and March 2026, work was undertaken with partner housing associations to prioritise offers of permanent accommodation for people in temporary accommodation. The last resident left the Inverclyde Centre on March 9, 2026.”
The paper added: “All rooms and storage cupboards on the first and second floors of the building have been cleared, as has the basement furniture store.
“This work has been completed against competing priorities within the service and reduced staffing resources.
“Work continues to progress the decommissioning of the Inverclyde Centre.”
