COUNCIL officers are “close” to setting a target reopening date for Helensburgh Leisure Centre, Argyll and Bute Council’s deputy leader has said.
A councillor for the town asked the question after the authority released the latest updates on repairs to the Waterfront facility on its website.
The centre has been closed since January 2025, when Storm Eowyn ripped off parts of the roof. The latest update has said that roof repairs are on track, with 75 per cent of the first fix works now complete.
Councillor Ross Moreland (Liberal Democrat, Dunoon) said that a projected reopening date could be decided soon, but could not commit to when that would be.
The discussion took place at a meeting of the full council on Wednesday, April 29.
Councillor Gary Mulvaney (Conservative, Helensburgh Central) said: “We all appreciate the updates on the council website, and in town we can see the work happening on the site.
“Repair tenders are due in terms of the internal work and electrics, and the key question, that it would be useful to have answered in public at some point, is when will it be open?
“The updates are appreciated, but as we are on track, it would be good to have a target date, and I am sure we must have one.
“That may be caveated with a number of different things that we are not in control of, but bearing in mind the time the project is taking, and that it is complex, it would be good to get a target reopening date into the public domain.”
Councillor Moreland responded: “You are quite right to ask the question, and we are getting close to releasing a target reopening date, although I am not sure when that will be.
“As soon as I have it I will share it with the area committee chair and ward members.”
Gary Mulvaney is standing for the Conservative Party in the Dumbarton constituency in the Scottish Parliament elections on Thursday, May 7.
The other candidates are Jackie Baillie (Labour), Elaine Ford (Liberal Democrat), Lynda Hannah McEwan (Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition), Andrew Muir (Independent), David Smith (Reform UK) and Sophie Traynor (SNP).
