IT WAS a busy and memorable week at Innellan Golf Club, with members celebrating success in the annual Bullwood Bucket match before quickly returning to competitive action in the club’s regular series of events and championship campaign.
The highlight of the week saw Innellan take on Cowal Golf Club in the annual Bullwood Bucket fixture. Innellan entered the contest as defending champions following last year’s narrow victory and were aiming to make it back-to-back wins.
With the Cowal leg of the competition having been washed out the previous week, the match became a winner-takes-all encounter at Innellan, adding extra significance to proceedings. Spirits were high as both clubs fielded strong teams, although Innellan hoped home course advantage would prove decisive.
Competition captain Andy Holland and playing partner Iain McKie set the tone for the hosts, becoming the first pair to finish and securing an opening victory over Ronnie and Davy from Cowal.
The momentum continued when Harry Black, returning to action, teamed up with Collin to record another point for Innellan against George and Craig.
With a noticeable gap before the remaining groups completed their rounds, it became clear that several tightly contested matches were unfolding across the course. Cowal responded through Iain and Scott, who defeated Innellan’s Shonna Derrett and Brian Emery to reduce the deficit to 2–1.
Innellan restored breathing space thanks to Murray Wilson and Ben Bryant, who delivered another important win over David and Conner.
The final match of the day provided late drama as Cowal’s Finlay and Ross edged out Scott Lauffer and Billy McBride on the final hole.
That result left Innellan with an overall victory and ensured the Bullwood Bucket would remain in their possession for a second consecutive year.
Club members praised Cowal for the excellent spirit in which the match was played and are already looking forward to renewing the rivalry next year.
Thanks were extended to club captain Keith Torrance for seeing the teams off and presenting the trophy afterwards, while competition captain Andy Holland was recognised for organising the event and post-match hospitality. Appreciation was also given to Ian Kennedy for keeping the clubhouse running smoothly and to the greenkeeping team for maintaining the course in outstanding condition.
After the celebrations ended, attention turned back to competition golf in the Saturday Series where scoring reached impressive levels.
Captain Keith Torrance led the way with a superb 44 Stableford points, featuring nine pars and two birdies to secure top spot. Garry Hopcroft finished second on an excellent 40 points, while Alasdair Simpson claimed third with 38.
After 10 Saturdays, Shonna Derrett continues to lead the overall standings on 72 points. Gordon Miller sits second on 66 with a game in hand, while Iain McKie occupies third place on 60. With several players still able to complete their eight counting rounds, the title race remains wide open.
In the Wednesday Series, Gordon Miller continued his strong form with victory on 21 points. James Gallagher and David McLaughlin shared second place on 18.
In the ladies’ nine-hole stableford competition, Katie Houstoun took first place with 18 points, ahead of Shonna Derrett and Margaret Lauder, who both finished on 16.
Round one of the Club Championship has also concluded and promises a thrilling finish when the competition resumes on Sunday, July 5.
Brian Emery currently leads the overall gross standings on 71, with Andy Rodger and Gordon Miller one shot behind on 72. Robert Baxter sits fourth on 73, followed by Stewart Campbell on 74 and Russell Lees on 75.
The top six players will go out in two three-balls at the end of play as the battle to become this year’s club champion reaches its conclusion.
