NFU Scotland has presented the 2026 Argyll & the Islands Stalwart Award to Angus MacFadyen of Bragleenmore Farm, Kilninver, at the Regional Board AGM held on Friday 16 January.

The award, which is presented annually in memory of Lachlan MacLean and Bert Leitch, both deeply respected figures in Scottish agriculture, recognises outstanding contribution to farming and rural life in the region. This year’s recipient, Angus MacFadyen, is widely regarded as one of the most dedicated and influential advocates for farming in Argyll and the Islands.

Announcing the award, Sybil MacPherson, current Regional Chair and the first recipient of the Stalwart Award in 2017, said:

“This year’s winner is someone both Lachlan and Bert would have deemed a worthy winner. A highly respected farmer, known for producing exceptional sheep and cattle, Angus’s pens of draft ewes and lambs are consistently presented to perfection.

But beyond the farm gate, Angus has worked tirelessly for the betterment of our industry – serving as Chair of the Lorn branch and then as Regional Chair for Argyll & the Islands. His leadership of the Agricultural Forum for 19 years helped shape key initiatives like the Argyll Hill Lamb Project.

A former Chair of the ELU Committee and NFUS Board member, Angus has always championed collaboration and community – and continues to do so today as part of the Local Sea Eagle Stakeholder Group.”

Angus’s contributions include:

·        Chairing the Argyll & the Islands Agricultural Forum for 19 years

·        Instrumental role in creating the Argyll Hill Lamb Project

·        10 years on the ELU Committee, including 5 as Chair

·        Service on the NFUS Board of Directors

·        Ongoing engagement in environmental and community issues

In a touching tribute, Sybil noted Angus’s enduring impact not only on policy and representation, but also on future generations of farmers:

“A real family man and a great supporter of young apprentices, Angus has led by example. Like many who give so much to NFUS and the wider industry, it’s only possible with strong support at home and so we also pay tribute to Alan, Rosemary and the late Angus senior for holding the fort.”

The award was presented by NFU Scotland Vice President Duncan Macalister, with Sybil MacPherson delivering the heartfelt citation.
