Letter to the Editor -Back the windfarm, listen to the kids

Editor – I’m writing to express my wholehearted support for the proposed Giant’s Burn Windfarm — a project which, judging by some of the objections swirling around town, has apparently been confused with a scheme to build enormous rotating blades that will somehow catapult Dunoon straight into the Firth of Clyde.

Some say the turbines will “ruin the view,” though I suspect many of these people haven’t looked up from their computers since the project

was announced. Others warn of “shadow flicker,” as if the windfarm is about to host a sheep-only disco. Personally, if we manage to get rhythm into the local livestock, that sounds like a win for the tourist board.

But while some adults are busy predicting apocalyptic sheep raves, the young people of Dunoon are quietly demonstrating far more common sense. They’re the ones who will actually inherit the climate, the coastline, the jobs — and, let’s be honest,

whatever elaborate mess we leave them in. They aren’t wringing their hands about a turbine photobombing a sunset; they’re asking sensible questions like “Will the planet still function when we’re 40?” and “Why are grown-ups scared of clean electricity?”

If anyone deserves a proper say on this project, it’s them. I genuinely hope the developer is working closely with Dunoon Grammar School and our primary schools — not just

for consultation, but because young people have that perfect blend of curiosity, blunt honesty, and the ability to explain climate science to adults who still think Wi-Fi causes headaches.

Let’s listen to them, back a project that brings clean energy to our area, and stop pretending wind turbines are harbingers of doom. They’re just big fans — and Dunoon could use a few.
