Toward Sailing Club’s second race of the season delivered an eventful evening on Thursday, April 30, as a gentle start gave way to challenging conditions on the water.
Competing in the Arran 3 race, sailors were initially met with flat seas and a light breeze, allowing all classes to get underway smoothly in their allotted start times. Early on, the smaller dinghies, including the Oppies and a Topper, set the pace before being reeled in by the faster keelboats.
Wild Goose quickly established herself at the front of the fleet, leading the charge around the first mark with Toots close behind. The order remained largely unchanged as the boats made their way towards the second mark, by which point all competitors had joined the race.
However, conditions shifted dramatically as the fleet approached the third mark. A sudden increase in wind strength caught many off guard, testing sailors’ reactions and equipment. One dinghy was forced to retire due to rigging issues, while others battled to stay upright in the strengthening breeze.
The change in conditions favoured the larger keelboats, which were better equipped to handle the gusts, while dinghy sailors faced a more demanding challenge. For many competitors, it was their first outing of the season, adding to the excitement of the race.
Wild Goose held onto her lead for much of the contest, but in the closing stages she was overtaken by Saorsa and Parallel Motion, who made the most of the stronger wind on the final leg.
After an enjoyable and testing evening on the water, all competitors returned ashore in good spirits and are already looking forward to next week’s race.
Results saw Parallel Motion (A Marshall) take first place, followed by Saorsa (A Finlay) in second and Wild Goose (G Judd) in third.
The club also looks ahead to the start of its dinghy training programme this week, as preparations for a busy summer season continue.
