PLANS for a new whisky distillery at Inveraray Castle Estate have been approved by council officers.
Stock Spirits (UK) Ltd’s proposal for the site at the former walled garden includes a distillery which it is hoped will produce two million litres of alcohol per year.
A visitor centre, including tasting rooms and a bar, also forms part of the plans, which were not subject to any representations from the public during the planning process.
Argyll and Bute Council planning officials have now granted planning permission, saying that the proposal tied in with the second local development plan.
A design and access statement submitted with the application said: “This new single malt distillery will be called Inveraray Distillery and we will produce a single malt whisky at Inveraray Distillery. This single malt will also be used in the Clan Campbell blend.
“The Inveraray Distillery will also include a visitor centre which is expected to become a major local tourist attraction, encouraging visitors to remain in the area even longer.
“The distillery and visitor centre are expected to create more than 20 full-time equivalent jobs for local people. It will be constructed in co-operation with local companies and suppliers, using the latest building methods and environmentally friendly solutions, ensuring carbon neutrality from day one.
“Inveraray Castle and Clan Campbell are inextricably linked, with the castle having been the Argyll family seat since the 15th century. Single malt Scotch whisky being distilled in the grounds will be a significant positive development – for the local community, the castle and Clan Campbell.
“The estate is blessed with a plentiful supply of excellent water which is an essential component of the distilling process.
“Torquhil Campbell, 13th Duke of Argyll and Chief of Clan Campbell is and has been an ambassador for the Clan Campbell blend for many years and is a staunch supporter of the Scotch whisky industry.
“The intention is to build a new distillery capable of producing two million litres of alcohol per annum, with associated infrastructure. Additionally, there will be a visitor centre situated within the walled garden that will offer retail, distillery tours and tastings.”
