New plans submitted for house at Helensburgh site

FRESH plans have been submitted for a house at a Helensburgh site after a previous application was withdrawn last year.

A proposal for a house at the vacant site at 2 West Abercromby Street was withdrawn after reservations were expressed by a local councillor.

Sarah Sharp has now submitted a new bid for planning permission to Argyll and Bute Council, which includes a one and a half storey house with accompanying garage.

The authority’s planning officers are expected to rule on the application by early May, with the public now able to view the plans and submit feedback.

Ms Sharp’s previous application was withdrawn in September, with Councillor Maurice Corry (Conservative, Lomond North) having submitted a neutral representation during the planning process.

Councillor Corry said in his submission on April 9, 2025: “We insist that this development includes the correct planting of the 12 or so replacement trees and also of a proper and decent hedge on West Abercromby Street, Helensburgh being at the front of the property.

“This was stipulated by the council to the developer when he constructed the new flats and converted the Balvaird Nursing Home.”

A supporting statement for the new application by planning agent Nick Hobson said: “The proposal would be to erect a new 1.5 storey dwellinghouse to the rear of the plot accessed via the existing driveway entrance on West Abercromby Street.

“To break up the massing a smaller single storey wing to the northeast will contain a garage and plant areas while to the south a single storey annex will contain a garden room and office/bedroom.

“Due to the slope of the site, and to minimise excessive underbuilding, the dwelling is dug into the slope to the rear of the site, and the ground floor levels are stepped at the garage and single storey annex to the south.

“By locating the dwelling on a north-south axis, towards the eastern edge of the plot, the private amenity garden ground on the western side can stretch the full depth of the plot and make use of its southerly aspect.

“This also minimises the disruption to the outlook of the new flats behind. As mentioned previously the landscape buffer, so characteristic of the surrounding streetscape will be reinforced with new hedge, shrub and native tree planting along the southern edge of the site. Once established this will “repair” the current gap along this section of West Abercromby Street.”
