Plans to introduce a new public realm, footpath improvements and active travel routes as part of a wider redevelopment in Greenock town centre have been published by Inverclyde Council.
A bid for planning permission for hard and soft landscaping works, which also include planting, has been submitted by agent company Ironside Farrar.
The proposal forms part of the Greenock Central Project, which consists of the partial demolition of the Oak Mall, reinstatement of the A8/A78 trunk road at street level and reconfiguration of the Bullring roundabout to provide a smaller signalised junction.
A design statement submitted with the application explained: “A small part of the site at Clyde Square falls within the Cathcart Square/William Street conservation area.
“The proposals have therefore been developed with careful regard to the established character and appearance of this setting.
“The design approach prioritises high quality materials, sensitive detailing and a coherent public realm that complements the surrounding townscape.
“This part of the site is currently public realm and will remain in public realm use.
“The proposals therefore do not alter the established layout or function of the space, but instead seek to improve its quality and performance.
“In doing so, the works preserve the character of the conservation area while delivering a modest, positive enhancement to this important part of Greenock town centre.”
While the various parts of the redevelopment will be carried out in phases, the local authority has previously said the whole project – largely funded by what was known as the Levelling Up Fund – is scheduled for completion in 2027.
A decision on this particular application will be announced at a later date.
