THE DANES maintained their impressive run of form at the weekend, securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Glasgow University. While the match featured flashes of genuine quality, it will likely be remembered more for a chaotic second-half which saw the referee reach for his back pocket on numerous occasions.
There was nothing to separate the teams in the opening 20 minutes, with both sides struggling to establish dominance, but the first bit of real quality came from the Danes.
Young left back Robbie McCormack skipped past his man and played a pass in behind the Glasgow Uni right back, skipper Sean Lawrence latched on to the pass and played a perfect cross to Robert Fisher who put his effort over the crossbar from six yards.
12 minutes later it was the same trio involved again, Robbie showing good composure to find Lawrence, who turned the Uni fullback inside-out before delivering a dangerous cross in to the box. The Uni defenders clearance fell to Fisher in the box but his first time volley was saved by the Uni keeper.
Glasgow Uni had the Danes worried on the 42nd minute, as a good interception in the middle of the park by the Uni number six allowed him to drive forward and hit a shot from the edge of the Danes box which went narrowly past the post.
The Danes rode their luck on the stroke of half-time – the Uni number ten drifted out to the right wing and put a dangerous cross in to the Danes box.
Danes’ number one Jamie Robertson done well to come and punch the cross but the ball landed at a Uni player who hit a first time effort inches over the bar.
Four minutes in to the second-half Danes’ ten, Jack McKirdy, picked the ball up in the middle of the park, skipped past two men and played a through ball to put Robert Fisher through on goal. But the Uni keeper was quick off his line to deny Fisher again.
But eventually the Danes found the breakthrough after 55 mins as Bailey Gilmour produced a perfect delivery from a corner kick. His corner found Yasser Basit at the back post who rose highest to power home a header from two yards out.
Shortly after the Danes goal the game descended into chaos, with Robert Fisher and Yasser Basit were both sent off for the Danes.
With the Danes hanging on Glasgow Uni then had three players and their manager sent off.
Despite the madness, the Danes showed grit and desire to stick together and see out the result.
Next up for the Danes is a tough away trip to face Gartcosh in the league. The game is at Greenfaulds High School and will kick off at 1pm.
