Editor – On Saturday evening’s Mass celebration in Saint Mun’s RC Church, Father McAuley made mention of one of the decorated Royal Mail post boxes on the esplanade, specifically the box with the Crib Scene.

As a priest, he was fairly tickled with it, as it depicted the original Christmas message with Christ in it rather than a tinselled Santa in his wellies and red onesie.

So much so that he asked the congregation if they could source the knitter, as he would like to show his appreciation of her creation.

I do not wish to appear misogynistic, and having been married for fifty-nine years I know my place, but in my eighty-odd years on this earth, I am of the opinion that most knitters are members of the Gentler Sex; Madame Defarge excluded.

As an octogenarian, my recollections may be somewhat hazy (if I ever have a tattoo, it will be my name and address), but I am almost sure that you did have a piece on these post box Christmas scenes.

If that is so, could I ask you to either request that the knitter contacts Father McAuley at Saint Mun’s Church or print this letter in the Observer so that she can get in touch with him?

On a personal level, I also appreciate the Crib Scene, but I have to admit that I love all of these Xmassy post box scenes. They bring a smile and a Good Will to All Men feeling to everyone who passes them.

I offer my sincere gratitude and best Christmas wishes to all the knitters involved.
