SOUTH DIVISION Two leaders Bute welcomed close neighbours Strachur-Dunoon to the Meadows on Saturday for the first meeting between the sides this season, with both teams eager to make their mark in what proved to be a lively and hard-fought encounter.
Bute made a fast start, capitalising on early pressure when top scorer Louie McDonald struck the opener after just five minutes, but any thoughts of a comfortable afternoon for the home side were quickly dashed.
Strachur-Dunoon responded in impressive fashion, launching quick counter-attacks and turning the game on its head with two well-taken goals in a four-minute spell.
Brandon Wilson and Duncan Smart both found the net to put the visitors 2–1 up midway through the half.
As the game settled, Bute began to reassert control
through their midfield trio of Lloyd Robertson, Regan Craig and Ewan McMillan, who started to dictate the tempo and link effectively with forwards McDonald and Aaron McFarlane.
Craig in particular was a constant presence—relentless in the tackle and creative on the ball—while Robertson and McMillan kept the momentum flowing.
The pressure eventually paid off when Neil McKirdy fired home from a cutback to level the score at 2–2 just after the half- hour mark.
But there was still time for more drama before the interval. In the dying moments of the first-half, Strachur-Dunoon launched another swift attack, and Steven Thomson restored their lead with a powerful finish to make it 3–2 at the break.
Bute came out strong in the second-half and were back on level terms within minutes, as McDonald’s long-range effort evaded the visiting keeper for his second of the match.
Manager, Stewart Stirling Sr, then began to rotate the squad, bringing on Ryan Tierney, Craig Speirs, Ruiraidh Soane, and Keiran Stirling to freshen up the side.
Although Bute enjoyed a spell of sustained pressure following the equaliser, they struggled to carveoutclear-cutchances.
As the match entered the final quarter, it was Strachur- Dunoon who looked the more threatening side, pushing forward with intent.
However, the Bute defence— led by Tierney, Duncan Martin, and Archie Kilpatrick—stood firm.
On the one occasion the backline was breached, goalkeeper, Stewart Stirling Jr, produced an excellent reflex save to keep the scores level.
In the end, a 3–3 draw was a fair result, reflecting a match in which both sides had strong spells and scoring opportunities.
Strachur-Dunoon will take confidence from their performance away to the league leaders, while Bute maintain their place at the top, though aware of the pressure from second-placed Kyles, who hold games in hand.
Bute now have a break in fixtures this coming weekend and will return to action with just three crucial matches left in their league campaign, whereas Strachur-Dunoon face stiff competition from Tayforth in a home tie for the Cowal men.
