STRACHUR-DUNOON underlined their title credentials with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over fellow promotion contenders Uddingston in a gripping South Division Two encounter in Stepps last Saturday.
In what was billed as a clash between the league’s top two in-form sides, the visitors arrived with an unbeaten record but fully aware of the physical challenge posed by a strong Uddingston outfit. From the outset, however, it was Strachur-Dunoon who seized the initiative.
They made an assured and confident start, dominating much of the opening period and translating that pressure into goals. The breakthrough came early through a moment of individual brilliance from Steven Thomson, whose stunning strike set the tone for the afternoon. The visitors continued to press and were rewarded again just before the interval when Brandon Wilson found the net to give his side a deserved two-goal cushion at the break.
Uddingston, though, responded with real determination after the restart. Raising the tempo, the hosts quickly drew themselves level. Andrew MacAlister converted from the penalty spot before Gavin MacLeod added a well-taken effort to bring the contest back to 2-2.
The match then developed into a fiercely competitive affair, with strong challenges flying in and both sides battling for control. Referee Ryan Stewart was kept busy, issuing several yellow cards as the intensity threatened to boil over.
Despite seeing their early dominance slip, Strachur-Dunoon regrouped and gradually worked their way back into the game. Applying renewed pressure, they forced Uddingston into defending once more, and their persistence ultimately paid off.
The decisive moment arrived when Thomson, finding space at the back post, struck for his second goal of the afternoon to restore his side’s lead. It proved to be the winner in a contest that showcased both quality and resilience from the Cowal side.
Thomson’s outstanding display in the forward line earned him the man of the match award, with his spectacular backhand strike for the opener a particular highlight.
The victory maintains Strachur-Dunoon’s impressive unbeaten run and reinforces their position at the top end of the table. The match also marked the first outing for the club’s new away kit, adding another positive note to an already memorable day.
Attention now turns to next Saturday, when Strachur-Dunoon face another challenging away fixture against Kyles, as they look to continue their strong start to the season.
