Businesses across Argyll and Bute are being urged to make the most of the free support available through Argyll and Bute Council’s Business Gateway service. Having the right advice can make all the difference between standing still and thriving.
The Business Gateway team combines local knowledge with practical expertise to help businesses of all sizes succeed. Advisers offer tailored solutions – from quick answers to tax queries, to sense-checking new ideas, identifying funding options, or providing long-term guidance.
“Our experienced team is here to provide practical advice that helps small and medium-sized businesses succeed,” said Councillor Math Campbell-Sturgess, the Council’s Policy Lead for Business Development.
“Last year, more than 450 new and existing businesses took advantage of this free support, and we encourage others to do the same.” Understanding Local Challenges
Running a business in Argyll and Bute comes with unique challenges. Geographical distance and transport links can make reaching wider markets more difficult. Seasonal fluctuations in tourism can create peaks and troughs in income. Recruiting and retaining skilled staff often proves difficult, while rising costs and new regulations add extra pressures. The Business Gateway team understands these local challenges and works alongside businesses to find practical solutions and long-term strategies.
Business Adviser Donald Melville, who has been with the team since 2013, holds qualifications in business counselling and enterprise support. “Every client is different. Some just want a quick answer, others need ongoing support. Our role is to respond to what’s needed,” he explained.
Jen Smith, an adviser for over 20 years and part of the Argyll and Bute team since 2017, has run her own businesses and lectured in enterprise. “With so many costs rising, it’s crucial to step back and take an analytical look at your business,” she said. “We can help review suppliers, margins, pricing, and customer engagement to improve the bottom line.”
John MacDonald, who joined the team in 2023, brings with him 25 years of financial services experience. “We offer a broad range of support, and where specialist expertise is needed, we connect clients with partner organisations or subject experts.” he explained.
The newest adviser, Lyndsey Phillips, joined in April 2025, bringing 30 years of experience across the private, public, and third sectors. She has also run her own successful businesses and holds a BA Hons in Business Strategy and Social Psychology. A qualified Food and Dairy Technologist, Coach and Trainer, Lyndsey is also a past President of the Association of Scottish Businesswomen.
“Our support is always confidential,” she said. “For many, we’re a sounding board for ideas or a safe space to share worries. If you’d like help to start or grow your business, we’d love to hear from you.”

And Helen Chinn of Mindful Sensory OT Services said: “Starting my own business in 2022 after a 25 year career in the NHS seemed like a giant leap. I am very grateful for the ongoing support, information and encouragement that Business Gateway have
provided over the past three years. The initial advice and start up grant enabled me to get the basics in place and have the confidence to take that first leap. As my business continues to grow and evolve, it’s been so helpful to keep building my skills through the free webinars and to have access to other support and funding opportunities available through Business Gateway. “ Get in Touch
