LAST month local man Grant Stirling inspired the Cowal community with his determination and generosity, completing a two-mile ‘Big Swim’ across the Firth of Clyde, to raise funds in memory of his daughter Mary.

Grant’s efforts raised an incredible £8,000, with funds distributed to charities close to both his and Mary’s heart.

On Cowal Games Saturday, Grant proudly handed over cheques totalling £7,000 to: Sheila McKechnie of Macmillan Cancer Support – whose nurses provided vital care and comfort to Mary and her family; Cowal Hospice which ensures local families have access to dignified, homely care, and the Pink Ladies of Argyll – a breast cancer charity offering friendship, support and wellbeing services to women across the region.

Plans are in place for Cowal Hospice to use some of this money to create treat boxes called ‘Mary’s Gift’ for those that would really benefit from a little lift, curated with love.

In addition, Grant made a donation of £1,000 to Calum’s Cabin on the Isle of Bute, a much-loved charity providing holiday retreats for children with cancer and their families.

Speaking after the swim, Grant said he was overwhelmed by the community support and generosity: “Every pound raised is a tribute to Mary and helps make a difference to families who need comfort and care. I couldn’t have done it without the encouragement of my wife Liz, brother-in-law Callum Cameron and everyone in Dunoon and beyond.”

His Big Swim across the Clyde has left a lasting mark – not just as a remarkable personal achievement, but as a powerful act of remembrance.
