Warning issued after counterfeit notes reported in Argyll

POLICE in Argyll have issued a warning after becoming aware of counterfeit banknotes in circulation across the area.

Officers are urging anyone who regularly handles cash – including shop staff, hospitality workers and business owners – to remain vigilant when accepting notes.

Members of the public are advised to check banknotes carefully for spelling errors, unusual wording, changes to holograms,

serial numbers or watermarks, which can all be signs that a note is not genuine.

Police Scotland has warned that deliberately using counterfeit currency is a criminal offence, and confirmed that all reports will be investigated.

Anyone who believes they may have received a counterfeit note, or who has information about people passing fake currency, is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
