The Watt Institution in Greenock is expected to reopen around late April or early May following the installation of a lift in the main museum space.
The iconic A-listed building in the town’s Kelly Street has been closed on a temporary basis since October to allow the works to take place.
The project was deemed necessary to address the lack of an accessible route to the upper exhibition space on the museum’s mezzanine floor.
A report by Ruth Binks, the outgoing corporate director for education, communities and organisational development, has provided an update on the state of play at the facility.
The paper, which will be considered at the education and communities committee on Tuesday, said: “The Watt Institution team continues to deliver improvements to collections management and collections care.
“This includes an ongoing collections audit, improved storage, cataloguing, repacking, photography and 3D scanning of collection objects.
“Work has progressed across multiple collection areas including archives, Egyptology, archaeology, world culture, numismatics, militaria, mineralogy, geology, palaeontology, oology, crustacea, conchology and works on paper.
“These developments will increase both physical and intellectual access to collections when the Watt Institution reopens in late April early May 2026 following the installation of a lift in the main museum space.”
A report to full council in October had said it was anticipated the facility would reopen to the public in February, however, it remains closed for the time being.
