WITH COLDER conditions now settling over Argyll and Bute, drivers are being urged to take extra care on the region’s roads as temperatures drop, tyre pressures fall, and early frosts become a daily occurrence. Here’s how to stay safe and prepared behind the wheel this winter.
1. Keep an eye on your tyres
Cold weather lowers tyre pressure, reducing grip on wet, icy or untreated roads. Check pressures regularly and inflate to the manufacturer’s recommended levels – usually found in the car manual or on a sticker inside
the driver’s door. Drivers are also advised to ensure at least 3mm of tread, and to consider fitting winter tyres for better traction in freezing conditions.
2. Smooth driving is safer driving
Harsh acceleration, braking or steering can quickly lead to a skid. Gently build up speed, brake earlier and use higher gears to maintain control. Remember, stopping distances can be up to 10 times longer on ice, so keep plenty of space between you and the vehicle ahead.
3. Clear the car completely
It’s both a legal requirement and vital for safety to remove all snow and ice from your car – including the roof, lights, mirrors and number plates. Use washer fluid with antifreeze and switch wipers off before you park to prevent them freezing to the windscreen.
4. Use the right lights
In falling snow, use dipped headlights for better visibility. If visibility drops below 100 metres, turn on your fog lights so other drivers can see you clearly – but remember to switch them off again when conditions improve.
5. Pack a winter kit
A breakdown in winter can be dangerous. Keep a shovel, torch, blanket, water, snacks and a phone charger in the boot. If you get stuck, try gently rocking the car in a higher gear. And if you need help, don’t hesitate to ask – intrueArgyllfashion, there’s always someone willing to lend a hand.
Staying prepared and adjusting your driving style can make all the difference as winter takes hold. Stay safe, stay steady, and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.
