Yellow weather warning issued to Argyll and Bute

ARGYLL and Bute residents are being urged to prepare for wintry conditions after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning  for snow and ice over the New Year period.

The warning is in force from 6am on New Year’s Day until 11.59pm on January 2, with forecasters predicting frequent and heavy snow showers, icy surfaces and strong northerly winds across the local region.

The Met Office says Argyll and Bute is among several parts of northern Scotland likely to be affected, raising concerns over travel disruption, difficult driving conditions and the potential for localised power outages.

Forecasters warned that showers are expected to increasingly turn to snow on New Year’s Day, accompanied by strong, possibly gale-force northerly winds, making it feel especially cold. Further weather warnings may follow as the cold spell develops.

Met Office deputy chief forecaster Mark Sidaway said the New Year will begin with a taste of winter, as Arctic air brings cold or very cold conditions, widespread frosts and snow to many parts of the country. He added that the wintry weather is expected to persist into the first week of January, urging people to keep up to date with the latest forecasts.

Traffic Scotland has advised motorists in Argyll and Bute to take extra care, warning that icy and snow-covered roads could make driving hazardous.

Health officials have also reminded residents to check in on elderly neighbours and those with existing health conditions, as cold temperatures can increase the risk of serious illness.
