Busy year for Dunoon Poppy Appeal volunteers

IT’S been a productive year for the volunteers behind the Dunoon Poppy Appeal, who have worked tirelessly to support veterans and mark key remembrance events throughout 2025.

The year began in May with VE Day 80th anniversary celebrations in Argyll Gardens, where volunteers hosted stalls to raise funds and awareness. The group also ran collections on both VE Day and VJ Day, helping to keep the spirit of remembrance alive in the community.

The local appeal team said they were ‘extremely grateful’ to have been chosen as one of the charities supported by this year’s Stay Fresh Festival, offering special thanks to organiser Helena McLay and her team for their ‘extraordinary donation.’

Additional contributions came from the local flower group, Shearwater Marine Services Ltd, McNees Building Services, and Dunoon Community Council, all of whom were thanked for their ongoing generosity.

Although this year’s main

Poppy Appeal was briefly delayed due to supply chain issues, volunteers still managed to distribute collection tins to businesses and shops across the town.

Meanwhile, the Poppy Appeal stalls in Morrisons and the Co-op have been running seven days a week, fully manned by dedicated volunteers.

Area coordinators for Poppy Scotland, Tom and Helen McCowan explained: “The Poppy Scotland stall is still operating from Morrisons, and will be there until 10th November, there is still a chance to get your Poppies ahead of Remembrance Sunday. We still have a large selection of official Poppy Scotland pin badges and a limited amount of official merchandise.

“On behalf of all the volunteers at the Dunoon Poppy Appeal, we would like to thank each and every person who has donated or purchased our official merchandise. Without your support, Poppy Scotland would not be able to continue to do its vital work and support our Armed Forces community.”
