Cowal Golf Club clarifies clubhouse and licence changes

COWAL GOLF Club has issued a clarification following some confusion arising from a report on recent planning documents linked to a change- of-use application for the upper floor of the former clubhouse.

The club has confirmed that the clubhouse building and golf course were purchased by a private individual in February 2020, and that Cowal Golf Club

now leases the lower floor of the building along with the golf course itself. The upper floor is separately leased and operated, and runs entirely independent of the golf club.

Earlier this year, Cowal Golf Club agreed in principle to relinquish its existing premises alcohol licence, prompting the upper- floor tenants to apply for permission to operate a public bar. The club emphasises that this process relates solely to the upper floor.

Cowal Golf Club stresses that it is not changing its name, will continue to operate

as a private members’ club, and remains responsible for maintaining the golf course for its members. The club also notes that references in planning documents to “existing use as a clubhouse” were incomplete, as its own operations currently comprise a shop and access to locker facilities rather than a full clubhouse offering.

The club says it has no formal affiliation or connection with the upper- floor leaseholders and wishes to ensure members and the public are fully informed.
