NOMINATIONS for this year’s Dunoon Community Champion Awards have now closed, and organisers have been flooded with submitted entries.
Organised by Dunoon Presents, the awards celebrate local heroes who go above and beyond for others – those who quietly make a difference in their communities, often without recognition.
This year’s winners – the Dunoon Presents Community Champion and the Dae it Yersel Young Community Champion – will be announced at Dunoon Dazzles on Saturday, November 22 at 5.30pm, just before the town’s Christmas lights are switched on.
Among those nominated this year is Annie Grant, celebrated for her lifelong dedication to piping and music education. Annie, who led the Dunoon Grammar School Pipe Band to victory at the World Championships, continues to teach and inspire young musicians, and has earned national accolades including the Yamaha Scottish Instrumental Teacher of the Year and the Balvenie Medal.
Grant Stirling was nominated for his tireless charity work in memory of his late daughter, Mary. From cycling from Inverurie to Dunoon to swimming the Clyde, his challenges have raised thousands for local causes.
Callum Newall, who received two nominations, was recognised for his huge contribution to local music and charity through Stay Fresh Fest, which has raised over £44,000 for good causes.
Rachael Wells, Police Scotland Youth Engagement Officer, was nominated for her outstanding work with young people — from mentoring and leading youth volunteers to reviving the local youth club, Social 22.
Fiona Campbell was put forward for organising the Kirn Gala, ensuring the much-loved event continued despite personal challenges.
Other nominees include SOAP, the local band known for years of fundraising performances; the tree surgeons who worked tirelessly during January’s storms; and Alison Munro, praised for her relentless charity work and leadership at the youth club.
Rhona Altin was recognised for over two decades of commitment to the Sandbank Gala, while Ros Harkin and her team at The Meeting Place were commended for their invaluable community support.
Donna-Marie Canavan received a heartfelt nomination for her work supporting families of children with additional needs, while Caroline Guichan and Lucy Richmond were praised for years of dedicated fundraising and Christmas hamper donations.
Yolanda Shoemake of Chouxmakes Cakes was nominated for her endless community spirit and family events, while Mary Gorman O’Neill and Rosemary Hargadon were both recognised for their volunteer work across ARC, the food bank, and Tah Dah women’s group.
Finally, Brian Tytler of Pricewise was acknowledged for his ongoing community support through difficult times, and Tony Hagan for years of volunteering at Dunoon Primary School and spreading festive cheer as Santa.
With nominations now closed, the community will have to wait to discover who will be crowned this year’s champions at Dunoon’s festive celebration on Saturday.
