Dunoon YFL deliver silverware

Dunoon YFL 2012s ended their inaugural competitive season in style, lifting the Paisley, Johnstone and District Divisional Plate with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over St Andrews at the KGV Sports Pavilion in Renfrew on Saturday, May 31.

With a strong travelling support behind them, the stage was set for a special day, and the young Dunoon side rose to the occasion with a performance full of heart, discipline, and flashes of quality that have come to define their season.

The opening stages of the final were understandably cagey, with both sides cautious and unwilling to give an inch.

St. Andrews showed their intent early, winning tackles and celebrating throw-ins like goals, making it clear they were just as determined to claim the silverware.

Their energy paid off as they took the lead midway through the first half, threading an inch-perfect pass from midfield for their striker to finish clinically from the edge of the box.

The goal served as a wake-up call for Dunoon, who slowly began to settle into their rhythm.

Their confidence grew as they returned to their passing football, building from the back and pressing high up the pitch.

Full-backs Callan Walker and Max Brown played a vital role, pushing St Andrews deep into their own half and setting the tone for the comeback.

The breakthrough came from a well-earned corner.

Judah McGinnigal delivered an inch-perfect ball to the back post, where Finn McColl rose highest to power home a thunderous header past the stranded keepersparking wild celebrations from the Dunoon supporters.

Buoyed by the equaliser, Dunoon continued to push, with another flowing move down the left.

Judah once again beat his marker and fizzed a low ball across the face of goal.

With Dunoon players queued up, it was Finn McColl who arrived again with perfect timing to fire home his second and give Dunoon a deserved 2-1 lead heading into the break.

The second-half was a true test of character and resilience.

St. Andrews pressed hard for an equaliser, but Dunoons defence stood strong, and goalkeeper Jack Crame put in a stellar display, commanding his box and making crucial stops when called upon.

Both sides gave everything in a tense, attritional second period, but Dunoon held firm to see out the win and claim the trophy.

As the final whistle blew, scenes of joy erupted from the Dunoon players, coaches, and supporters.

The medal and trophy ceremony was a fitting celebration for a squad that has grown and excelled throughout their first competitive season.

The team now turns its attention to the future, eager to build on this brilliant campaign.
