A community charity shop in Rothesay has once again demonstrated the power of local generosity, distributing more than 10,000 to support organisations and initiatives across the island.
For Bute recently donated a total of £10,495 to a range of good causes, benefiting groups that span sport, culture, youth development and environmental conservation.
Among the recipients was the Bute Island Rudimental Drumming School, which received £1,200 to purchase 12 new snare drums and harnesses. The equipment will support students’ training and help them take part in community events across the island.
A significant £3,000 contribution was awarded to the Isle of Bute Open Bowling Championships, set to take place from July 27 to August 1. The week-long competition continues to grow in popularity and regularly attracts some of the country’s top bowlers.
Another £3,000 went to Craigmore Bowling Club to assist with essential repairs to the clubhouse roof, which has been deteriorating.
Environmental efforts were also supported, with Bute Conservation Trust receiving £1,795 to fund materials for repairing the steps leading from the Seal View viewpoint at Scalpsie Bay down to the beach. The work itself will be carried out by volunteers.
Youth initiatives also benefited, including the Bute Junior Agricultural Club, which was awarded £1,000 towards its 80th anniversary dinner dance taking place later this year. The club, which caters to young people aged 14 to 30, runs a wide variety of events throughout the year for both members and the wider community.
Meanwhile, Downes Irish Dance Academy received £500 to help cover expenses as dancers travel to compete in the World Championships in Belgium this month.
A spokesperson for For Bute said the charity’s ability to provide funding relies entirely on the continued generosity of the local community through donations of goods.
They added that while recent contributions have been strong, donations are always needed to maintain this level of support. The shop remains open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm at 39 Victoria Street, welcoming anyone wishing to contribute.
