Rothesay Christmas switch-on hailed a success

ROTHESAY REVELLED in what has been described as “the best Christmas lights ever” to be held on the island.

The crowd-packed switch- on was the result of hard work and determination by a band of volunteers who strung up lights, decorations and helped people find the best spot to enjoy the night.

Rothesay’s festive season got under way officially as the lights were switched on during a well-attended community gathering at the bandstand.

The buzz of the event showed community spirit shining as the Christmas lights sparkled.

The decorated tree took pride of place, surrounded by wall lights on various buildings around the town, including the castle, bringing a cheerful glow to the town centre. Families and friends gathered to enjoy the occasion with Cast and Ember offering hot chocolate topped with cream and marshmallows, alongside freshly made doughnuts.

A new addition this year was the “Quiet Santa,” providing a calmer, more inclusive experience for children and families who preferred a gentler setting away from the bustle. This thoughtful feature was very warmly received and well attended.

Later, Santa joined the crowds at the amphitheatre, handing out selection boxes and posing for photos with delighted children.

Bute Community Band opened the night with a wonderful selection of Christmas Carols. Ricky Harrison got the crowd going with disco music and festive cheer.

Pupils from Rothesay Primary, St Andrews Primary and youngsters from Apple Tree Nursery filled the evening with festive music, their renditions of Christmas songs adding to the joyful atmosphere.

The highlight came when Hadley from Rothesay Primary pressed the “big switch,” lighting up the town and marking the start of the season.

Duncan Martin, Chair of Isle of Bute Bid said: “The Christmas Light Switch on and next week’s Festive Alpaca’s with late night shopping events are the first events delivered by the new BID team.

“It was great to see the team, local businesses and the community come together for a spectacular evening. My warmest thanks to Bute Resilience and Argyll and Bute Council for helping us with all the planning.”

It was a wholesome evening of community spirit, simple pleasures, and festive cheer. The lights are now on, and Rothesay is ready for Christmas.
