Small jobs make a big difference - Bute Conservation volunteers clear the way

JUST as the rains stopped on Saturday, a small team of Conservation Volunteers arrived at the Suidhe Wood path near Kilchattan Bay to tackle a group of birch trees which had been affected by the recent Storm Amy.

One tree had fallen across the path which had been quickly removed, but several others were leaning precariously over the path and needed to be felled.

With two chainsaws in action and four pairs of hands to shift the felled timber, the task was quickly completed and an unsightly and potentially dangerous hazard was removed.

Another victim of the storm was the bridge over the burn behind the Gortans.

A branch had fallen on the handrail and this had broken the supporting post sending rail and post into the burn. The trust is grateful to Robert Currie for his assistance in removing the broken rail and post from the burn and fitting

a replacement to ensure safe passage for those crossing. The Trust would also like to advertise its Annual General Meeting, which will be held in the hall of the United Church

of Bute on Monday, November 17, at 7.30pm. The meeting is open to anyone who would like to attend and support the essential work in maintaining the network

of paths around the island of Bute
