Sports clubs seek share of shrinking grants pot

Community groups, sports clubs and uniformed organisations are among those hoping to land a windfall from what’s left of an Inverclyde Council funding pot.

Elected members will be asked to agree the level of funding that should be allocated to the organisations who have applied to the community grants fund next week.

The matter is set to be discussed at a meeting of the local authority’s grants sub-committee which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, March 3.

It marks the second round of the process after 98 grants, totalling £246,747, were given the seal of approval during the first round last year.

Taking into account the previously agreed commitments, the balance for the kitty now stands at £11,453 – significantly less than the total of £54,781.16 requested by 11 applicants.

Council officers have made recommendations totalling £11,388.31 which, if given the green light, will mean a balance of just £64.69 remains in the fund.

A report, which will be considered at the meeting, explained: “To assist the grants sub-committee, officers recommend indicative awards within the budget available.

“These reflect previous awards made to applicants; awards made to similar projects approved by the sub-committee; or other conditions of grant.”

It continued: “Applications are considered from organisations where funding is being sought for various projects/activities and/or running costs.

“Awards made cannot exceed £10,000 per organisation … Organisations need to specify how the awarding of a grant would contribute to and benefit the wider community in line with our local priorities of empowered people; working people; healthy people and places; supportive place and thriving place.

“The service will continue to monitor the community grants process to ensure it continues to achieve its objectives.”

The 11 applicants listed in the report are Bridge of Weir Choral Society, Green Tangerine CIC, Clyde Coast Radio, Salvation Army, the Tuesday Club, WISHES Group, Inverclyde American Community Football Club, Birkmyre Rugby Club, Greenock and District Nautical Youth Trust, 1st Gourock Scout Group and Greenock and District Scout Council.

The community grants fund was created in 2021 following a decision to bring three schemes together.
