SPT says it’s sorry for ferry concession confusion

TRANSPORT chiefs have apologised to ferry passengers across the region for causing unnecessary alarm and confusion over travel card concessions.

SPT (Strathclyde Partnership for Transport) has written to the transport lead at Dunoon Community Council (DCC) to say they’re sorry for causing confusion or a lack of clarity over its decision to merge the ferry concession card into the National Entitlement Card (NEC).

Lesley Aird, the director of finance and corporate support at the SPT, has written to David Clough at the DCC to say: “Please accept my apologies for any confusion or inconvenience in this matter.”

Earlier, Mr Clough commented: “There seems to be a complete breakdown of communication about something that will affect the population of Dunoon.”

He said: “It’s a real pity that SPT have failed to communicate with Dunoon Community Council about what is in fact a positive change, but has already caused great confusion amongst some of our residents.”

Mr Clough has welcomed the response from the SPT and emphasised the switch from a stand-alone ferry card across to the NEC is positive.

Lesley Aird clarified: “I can confirm that the information regarding the recent changes to Ferry Concession Cards was communicated in the usual ways through the ferry operators, CalMac and Western Ferries.

“Discussions took place with both operators regarding the change several weeks ago. Both operators were fully aware of the change and this was formally followed up by letter on January 23, when a letter was also issued to Argyll and Bute Council.

“We have reached out to CalMac today asking them to ensure that the information previously shared by SPT has been disseminated to their local teams.”

She added: “Integrating ferry entitlement with the NEC will provide significant benefits for customers, removing the need for a separate ferry card and simplifying the process for cardholders. The new combined 60+ NEC has no expiry date, offering greater certainty and convenience. Once a customer qualifies for ferry entitlement, it will remain in place unless they move outwith an eligible island or peninsula.”

The SPT website suggests the quickest way to apply for, or to renew, an NEC is online.

There is also a phone number if residents are unable to go online or simply need some help in the matter. That number is 0141 333 3211 and it is available from 0900–1300 Mondays to Fridays.
