MUSIC lovers in Cowal are in for a treat this weekend as Cowal Music Club presents an unusual and innovative afternoon concert in Dunoon’s Burgh Hall.
Acclaimed violinist Steve Bingham will take to the stage on Sunday, March 22 at 2.30pm, performing an eclectic programme that blends classical music with modern technology – including the use of an electric violin and live looping.
The concert promises a musical journey from Bach to the Beatles, featuring a wide variety of styles and influences. Known for his engaging stage presence, Bingham combines performance with storytelling, creating a lively and entertaining experience for audiences.
Recently described by The Independent as an extraordinary performer, Bingham trained as a classical violinist at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Over the years he has performed around the world as founder of the Bingham String Quartet, as well as appearing as a soloist and orchestral leader with a number of leading UK ensembles.
Alongside his classical career, he has explored a wide range of musical genres, performing solo recitals using live looping technology and collaborating with folk, pop and rock musicians.
His diverse musical interests are reflected in an impressive catalogue of recordings ranging from unaccompanied Bach to multi-tracked works by composer Michael Nyman, as well as newly commissioned pieces for violin.
Sunday’s programme will feature a fascinating mix of repertoire old and new, including Astor Piazzolla’s Tango Etudes, Sir James MacMillan’s The Tryst, Tubular Bells for One by Mike Oldfield, and Syrinx by Debussy in a special arrangement by Bingham.
The audience will also hear more contemporary and unexpected selections such as It’s a Sin by the Pet Shop Boys, the traditional Japanese melody Sakura (Cherry Blossom), and Time Lapse by Michael Nyman.
With its blend of classical virtuosity, modern technology and genre-crossing repertoire, the concert promises to be a memorable and distinctive afternoon of music.
Tickets are available through Cowal Music Club, and organisers say it is an event not to be missed.
