NFU Scotland opens nominations for top leadership roles

FARMERS and crofters across Scotland are being invited to put themselves forward for leadership positions within NFU Scotland, ahead of elections in February next year.

Nominations are now open for the union’s President and two Vice President positions, with any NFU Scotland member eligible to stand if proposed and seconded by fellow members.

Current President Andrew Connon and Vice Presidents Duncan Macalister and Robert Neill will complete their first two-year terms in February 2027, and all three are eligible to seek re-election.

Under the union’s rules, the President can serve a second two-year term, while Vice Presidents face annual elections after completing their initial two-year term.

The successful candidates will be chosen by NFU Scotland’s Council, which comprises representatives from branches across the country, at a meeting in Glasgow on Friday, February 12.

An election will only be necessary if the number of candidates exceeds the positions available. Otherwise, candidates may be elected unopposed.

NFU Scotland chief executive John Davidson said: “The process of electing NFU Scotland’s President and Vice Presidents is an important one for our organisation and for the wider farming and crofting sectors that we represent.

“These roles provide the opportunity to influence policy, engage with governments and stakeholders, and champion the interests of Scotland’s farmers and crofters at the highest levels.

“We know there is a wealth of talent, knowledge and experience within our membership and I would encourage anyone interested in helping shape the future direction of the Union to consider putting themselves forward.”

Mr Davidson added that serving in either role was a significant responsibility and an honour, and encouraged prospective candidates to contact him to discuss what would be involved.

Nominations close at 5pm on Friday, December 4, with the full list of candidates expected to be announced on Monday, December 14.

Members interested in standing should contact Mr Davidson for further information and nomination forms.
